Weight loss surgery: necessity or option?
Bypass Weight Loss Surgery. Bypass weight loss sugery or gastric weightloss surgery. Bypass bariatric weight loss surgery !People who decide to undergo weight loss surgery as a medical necessity must be evaluated thoroughly to ensure that their goals are achieved with the right surgical weight loss program. Their age, existing health conditions and importantly their BMI or body mass index must meet the qualifying requirements before they are subject to the right procedure. Surgeon and patient should discuss the options available and most fitting for a patient’s weight loss objectives. These surgical weight loss options may be generally classified as procedures that are restrictive, malabsorptive or a combination of both.
Restrictive procedures, as the name suggests, limit food from being absorbed by the body by creating a smaller stomach pouch. The patient feels full faster with lesser food intake. Examples of this procedure are gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy.
Malabsorptive procedures involve diverting the flow of food from a portion of the small intestines to keep the body from absorbing too much calories and nutrients. The small intestines absorb calories and nutrients from food and allowing the food to skip a part of it reduces its absorptive functions. These procedures are no longer popularly used because of its serious complications.
Combination procedures that involve both restrictive and malabsorptive procedures are gastric bypass surgery and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. These are surgical weight loss options where a portion of the stomach is made into a small pouch that food passes through while part of the small intestines is cut and attached to the smaller stomach pouch to keep the food from flowing through the whole length of the small intestines. These procedures both restrict the amount of food intake with the smaller stomach pouch and reduces nutrient absorption through the shorter food route.
Patients should be made aware of the mechanics of these surgical weight loss procedures, the benefits as well as the risks and possible complications they may entail. An informed decision as to which option to take makes for a successful weight loss surgery.
