The risks and complications associated with this type of surgery may arise depending on the condition of the patient prior to the surgery, the expertise of the bariatric surgeon performing the procedure, the level of tolerance of the patient for the surgery and many other factors that may not be even anticipated before surgery. Present weight, age and medical history may also have an influence on the type of risk a patient may be faced with.
Gastric bypass surgery comes with several risks. This procedure being an abdominal surgery, it carries with it pain, bleeding, injury to stomach and other organs within the operative areas. There may also be the possibility of a heart stroke, collapsed lungs or even death. Since gastric bypass surgery involves the creation of a small stomach pouch, there is also the danger of dehiscence which means that the surgically-created pouch may burst or separate. There could also be leaks from where the pouch was stapled. Ulcers may develop. The patient may experience nausea, fainting, diarrhea or the dumping syndrome. There might be the difficulty of identifying the stomach and the surrounding organs in the event bleeding, ulcers and malignancy occur after bariatric surgery. Vitamin deficiency may occur as a result since the food passes through a shorter route through the small intestines. The small intestines absorb nutrients, minerals and vitamins from food.
Studies show that complications after gastric bypass surgery occur in 1 out of 200 patients. Complications occur in 1 out of 1000 patients of gastric banding. It must be emphasized then that surgeon and patient thoroughly consider all other possible weight loss procedures before deciding on gastric bypass surgery because of the risks and complications involved.
